Horticulture Product Development Technician is responsible for supporting innovation as a member of the Horticulture Development Team. This position will play a significant role in the development and implementation of new products and process technologies by partnering with engineers in both lab and manufacturing environments to achieve our growth and productivity goals.  This position requires technical curiosity and hands-on aptitude to develop ideas, create prototypes, and evaluate their performance.

Horticulture Product Development Technician Responsibilities:
  • Fabricate product prototypes to understand possible design solutions
  • Develop customer application mimics to evaluate product performance
  • Build and operate lab, plant grow room and general pilot scale processes
  • Partner with Product Testing to understand and execute testing
  • Prepare samples for physical property measurements
  • Document all testing data appropriately in LIMS, lab notebooks, memo reports or technical reports.
  • Supports internal plant growth trials to test growing media products.
  • Participates in plant trial planning including safety
  • Prepares equipment and materials for successful trial execution
  • Coordinates trial close out tasks including shipping and material testing

Horticulture Product Development Technician Requirements:
  • Minimum of an Associates degree in a technical field
  • Bachelors degree in engineering or scientific field preferred
  • Hands-on mechanical skills including ability to build, operate, and maintain equipment
  • Some experience in horticulture or plant sciences
  • Exposure to and interest in design, prototyping, and manufacturing
  • Experience in a manufacturing and/or R&D facility
  • Experience with statistical analysis, data analysis, and reporting
  • Proficient in using a computer including MS Office Suite
  • Experience designing test methods, data collection and analysis
  • Ability to travel <20% of the time with advanced notice. Trial time will vary through the year and be dependent of project needs.
  • Practices safety-conscious behaviors in all operational processes and procedures
  • Self-starting problem solver who works with minimal supervision and balances multiple assignments
  • Attention to detail and dedication to documenting knowledge
