Packaging Engineer will lead and support packaging development strategies for new products, product line extensions, and existing product updates. Responsibilities include the development and testing of new packaging for projects. This role leads the development, review, approval, and maintenance of packaging components and system specifications.
 
Packaging Engineer Responsibilities:
  • Design a bill of materials (BOM) to ensure product integrity and appeal under varying shipping and display conditions
  • Test, analyze, and select packaging materials based on feasibility, durability, cost-effectiveness, and quality assurance
  • Help ensure packaging complies with all regulations. Evaluate the effectiveness of product and packaging
  • Work with Marketing/Product teams to understand cost cutting, various methods of packaging,
  • Drive multiple projects concurrently. Collaborate with Product management colleagues early in new product development projects to ensure robust and on-time product launches through package design, material testing, prototype development, and performance testing
  • Support cross-functional teams with R&D, engineering, project management, quality, manufacturing, product management, supply chain, regulatory and marketing to ensure project success
  • Generate and support the preparation of packaging specifications, capability studies, test plans, test protocols, test reports, risk assessments, and other relevant project/process documentation
  • Trouble-shoot and resolve new and existing packaging issues involving designs, materials, and processes through creative, timely, and cost-effective solutions
  • Define packaging testing requirements, and coordinate testing programs internally and at outside testing facilities
  • Drive investigative bench study experiments for packaging design, as required
  • Work with external suppliers to design, specify, and qualify both packaging components and packaging systems
  • Perform root cause analysis and data gathering/analysis related to packaging design, material, process failures, customer complaints and corrective actions as required
 
Packaging Engineer Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Packaging Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field
  • Minimum of 3 years package engineering work experience
  • Intermediate knowledge related to paperboard, corrugated, flexible packaging films, thermoformed trays, injection molded parts, labels, and packaging equipment
  • Previous experience with live goods, food/beverage, agriculture, or similar industries preferred.
  • Licensed with NSPE.
  • 6 Sigma-Lean Certification a plus
  • Demonstrable proficiency in 3D CAD or SolidWorks software
  • Ability to work independently to plan and schedule activities to meet project timelines
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for occasional transportation between facilities (less than 1 mile)
  • Ability to travel 10 - 20%, domestically and internationally
