Chemical Laboratory Technician
Charlotte, NC

 

The Laboratory Technician supports the technical service team with a focus on coatings for metal protection. This hands-on position involves formulation, application, and testing of both water-based and solvent-based coatings. The technician will work closely with chemists and other technical staff to prepare formulations, perform laboratory evaluations, and maintain a safe, efficient work environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform hands-on laboratory work with water-based and solvent-based coatings.
  • Prepare coating formulations following established recipes and project guidelines.
  • Accurately weigh, label, and mix raw materials using balances, overhead mixers, and high-shear dispersers.
  • Incorporate pigments and additives to adjust viscosity, color, and flow characteristics.
  • Safely operate spray equipment (HVLP spray guns) to apply coatings in a spray booth environment.
  • Wear required PPE, including a respirator hood and protective suit, during spraying operations.
  • Conduct drawdowns, wire rod applications, and oven drying of coated panels.
  • Perform coating performance tests, including viscosity, color measurements, adhesion, hardness, chemical and corrosion resistance
  • Collect, document, and analyze test data; communicate results to chemists and technical managers.
  • Maintain an organized, clean, and safe laboratory workspace.
  • Manage laboratory inventory and participate in safety inspections.
  • Adhere to all facility safety, environmental, and operational standards.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering with hands-on lab experience or High school diploma with 5+ years of relevant laboratory experience.

  • Proven hands-on experience working with water-based and solvent-based coatings.
  • Ability to wear a respirator hood during paint spraying operations.
  • Knowledge of coating formulation, mixing, and application techniques.
  • Familiarity with laboratory testing procedures and instrumentation.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and documentation accuracy.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to lift, move, and handle lab materials and equipment safely.
  • Comfortable working 100% onsite in a lab and spray booth setting.
  • Must successfully complete required medical exams and drug screening prior to employment.
