CMM Programmer Overview
We are seeking an experienced CMM Programmer to support manufacturing and quality operations by developing, maintaining, and optimizing Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) inspection programs. This role requires strong expertise in PC-DMIS programming, advanced GD&T interpretation, and the ability to support inspection processes for machined components, castings, weldments, and assemblies in a heavy industrial manufacturing environment. Experience with portable CMM arms is highly preferred.
CMM Programmer Responsibilities
  • Develop, modify, and optimize CMM inspection programs and inspection plans using PC-DMIS on Hexagon CMMs.
  • Provide shop floor support and troubleshoot CMM programs to ensure efficient inspection operations.
  • Train inspection personnel on CMM best practices and programming standards.
  • Interpret and apply advanced GD&T in accordance with ASME Y14.5, including datum structures, profile tolerances, and positional controls.
  • Develop fixturing, probing strategies, and measurement methods to ensure accurate and repeatable inspection results.
  • Create comprehensive inspection plans utilizing CMMs and conventional measuring equipment.
  • Support root cause investigations, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives using dimensional inspection data.
  • Conduct or assist with measurement system evaluations and manufacturing process audits.
  • Evaluate existing manual inspection methods and recommend improvements through CMM automation and programming.
  • Perform routine inspections using hand gages as needed.
  • Validate CMM programs through inspection layouts and first article inspections.
  • Troubleshoot CMM equipment issues and coordinate with service providers when necessary.
CMM Programmer Qualifications
  • 5–7 years of experience as a CMM Programmer, Metrology Technician, or Quality Inspector with significant CMM programming responsibilities.
  • Expert knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Advanced experience programming PC-DMIS (online and/or offline), including optimizing existing inspection programs.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, and technical specifications.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills related to dimensional measurement.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience programming and operating portable CMM arms (FARO, Hexagon/Romer, or similar) using PolyWorks preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with portable CMM arms and related metrology software preferred.
  • Experience inspecting large machined components, castings, weldments, gears, or complex assemblies preferred.
  • Experience with CAD software such as Creo, NX, or SolidWorks preferred.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001:2015 quality systems preferred.
  • Experience with additional metrology software or inspection automation tools preferred.
