CPD&D Laboratory Technician

The Laboratory Technician will work hands-on with insects, plant material, and nematodes while performing routine, detailed laboratory and greenhouse tasks. Work environments will vary throughout the day, including laboratory, greenhouse, and insectary colonies. A strong culture of safety is maintained, and extensive training in safety, ergonomics, and laboratory SOPs will be provided.

The Laboratory Technician will work hands-on with insects, plant material, and nematodes while performing routine, detailed laboratory and greenhouse tasks. Work environments will vary throughout the day, including laboratory, greenhouse, and insectary colonies. A strong culture of safety is maintained, and extensive training in safety, ergonomics, and laboratory SOPs will be provided.
Laboratory Technician Responsibilities:
- Clip, thin, and maintain plants used in testing.
- Infest plant and artificial diet material with various (non-stinging, non-hazardous) insect species.
- Perform routine assay formulation using manual pipettes.
- Conduct specialized assay applications using hand sprayers and track sprayers.
- Maintain laboratory cleanliness and restock supplies as needed.
- Grade insect assays and record results accurately.
- Prepare media for entomology testing.
- Scribe for evaluators and document experimental data.
- Adhere to all safety and ergonomic protocols; PPE provided for laboratory and spraying activities.
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Entomology, or Nematology.
- Comfortable using chemical sprays safely.
- Able to follow laboratory SOPs and protocols accurately.
- Knowledge of and adherence to safety protocols, including proper PPE use; understands EH&S standards.
- Ability to stand for long periods and work in laboratory, greenhouse, and insectary environments.
- Flexible and able to shift focus throughout the day as needed.
