Engineering Technician – Automation Systems Engineering

The Engineering Technician will be a member of the Automation Systems Engineering team. You will be working with Automation Scientists, Software Engineers, and Mechatronics Engineers to help set up new automation systems, assist in teaching and configuring robots, and support daily operation and maintenance across a variety of automated equipment. You should expect variety in your day-to-day work, along with an agile environment where priorities can shift quickly in response to new projects and evolving customer needs. The Automation team supports a wide range of systems, like robotic arms, motion stages, sensors, networking hardware, and custom control software, so every day brings a new challenge to learn and problem-solve.
Engineering Technician Responsibilities:

The Engineering Technician will be a member of the Automation Systems Engineering team. Engineering Technician Responsibilities:
- System Assembly & Integration: Assist in the assembly, configuration, integration, and validation of automated lab systems, including mechanical, electrical, and software components.
- Robotics Configuration: Assist in setting up and teaching robotic systems for automated workflows, working with peripheral devices such as grippers, motion stages, and sensors to ensure smooth and reliable operation.
- System Troubleshooting: Support the diagnosis and repair of common issues across electrical, mechanical, and software systems, including checking power, connections, and device settings.
- Maintenance & Support: Help perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on automation systems, checking mechanical, electrical, and software components for proper operation.
- Documentation: Help record and update information about equipment settings, software versions, and hardware changes for automation systems.
- Collaboration: Work closely with engineers, scientists, and other stakeholders to commission new systems.
- Associate degree in related technical field or Bachelor’s degree in a non-related field and 0-3 years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and hands-on experience (e.g., 3+ years in laboratory automation, instrumentation, or related technical work) that demonstrates the same level of knowledge and ability.
- This position requires a high degree of scheduling flexibility. Ad hoc travel of up to one-week intervals may be required to rapidly troubleshoot and repair system malfunctions at customer locations.
- This reactive travel supports our high-priority support mandates, and we estimate it will remain under 20% of your annual time.
- Strong problem-solving mindset and the ability to adapt in fast-paced environments.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail in all aspects of work.
- Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills; ability to convey concepts and priorities, as well as an ability to solicit and/or accept feedback.
- Ability to bend, reach, and lift, push, or pull up to 25lbs. Ability to stand or walk for long periods of time. Repetitive action may be required while performing tasks.
- Practical experience working with mechanical assemblies, electrical wiring and components, robotic systems, firmware configuration, and network connectivity.
- Experience in operating, troubleshooting, or maintaining laboratory automation equipment or other complex automated machinery.
- Basic understanding of network configuration and troubleshooting, including IP addressing, network switches, routers, and connected devices.
- Basic proficiency with Python or similar scripting languages for device configuration, testing, or automation tasks.
