The Fermentation Technician operates and monitors fermenter and bioreactor systems to support cell growth, production, and harvesting processes in a laboratory setting. This role performs routine sampling, testing, and cleaning while following established SOPs to ensure consistent and reliable results. The position also includes basic equipment maintenance and troubleshooting to keep lab systems running effectively.
Fermentation Technician Responsibilities:
- Oversee full fermenter operations including sterilization, inoculation, feeding, cell growth monitoring, harvesting, cell deactivation, and cleaning
- Apply advanced sterile techniques for shake flask inoculation and sampling
- Perform routine fermenter sampling and process monitoring during scheduled operations
- Operate autoclaves and safely handle acid/base preparation and mixing
- Conduct off-line sample testing using laboratory instruments (viscometers, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, pH meters, etc.)
- Perform preventive maintenance on laboratory and fermenter equipment to ensure reliable operation
- Troubleshoot equipment issues and support repair or replacement of fermenter components (e.g., valves and bioreactor parts)
- Execute work according to SOPs while identifying and recommending process improvements
- Document all experimental data accurately and maintain detailed lab records
- Identify deviations in process or results and contribute data to technical reports
- Manage lab supplies including ordering, receiving, and stocking materials
- Collaborate with team members and leadership to improve efficiency and reduce material costs
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives such as Lean or Six Sigma projects
- Independently plan and manage daily and project-based work assignments
- 1 - 5 years of experience operating fermenters, bioreactors, or similar cell culture/bioprocess systems
- Understanding of sterile technique and aseptic processing
- 1 - 5 years of experience with laboratory equipment such as autoclaves, centrifuges, pH meters, viscometers, and spectrophotometers
- Mechanical aptitude with ability to perform basic equipment maintenance and replace components (e.g., valves, fittings, tubing)
- Ability to follow and execute SOPs precisely while identifying opportunities for improvement
- Strong documentation skills and attention to detail in maintaining lab records
- Ability to troubleshoot process and equipment issues independently
- Experience with acid/base handling and general laboratory chemical safety
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
- Strong organizational skills with ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities independently
