The Laboratory Technician supports research and development initiatives by providing technical testing, analysis, and data reporting for asphalt and roofing-related products. This role contributes to the advancement of new products, materials, and processes through both routine and advanced laboratory testing. The technician works closely with scientists, engineers, and product developers to ensure accurate, timely, and high-quality technical data.

Laboratory Technician Responsibilities:
  • Become proficient in a wide range of asphalt testing methods, including but not limited to viscosity, penetration, softening point, rheology, and related physical property tests
  • Perform testing in accordance with ASTM and/or AASHTO standards and established laboratory procedures
  • Understand physical properties of various asphalt types and assist in troubleshooting test results
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and analytical equipment
  • Support calibration, preventative maintenance, inventory management, and general lab upkeep
  • Collaborate effectively with engineers, scientists, and product developers to provide quality data and clear communication on timelines and findings
  • Analyze testing data and suggest improvements to testing methods and operational efficiency
  • Communicate technical results clearly to management both verbally and in written reports
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation of all testing activities
  • Participate in regular safety meetings and safety huddles
  • Ensure strict compliance with all standard safety procedures, corporate policies, SOPs, and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs)
  • Maintain a zero-accident mindset while working with hot asphalt, chemicals, and laboratory equipment

Laboratory Technician Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical, laboratory, engineering, or science-related discipline with 0–2 years of relevant lab experience, OR
  • Associate’s degree in a technical, laboratory, engineering, or science-related discipline with 1–3 years of relevant lab experience in lieu of a four-year degree
  • Preference for candidates with a minimum of 2 years of laboratory experience
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on experience with analytical lab equipment
  • Ability to operate laboratory instruments and deliver accurate, high-quality test results
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
