The Sterile Processing Department Supervisor oversees the daily operations of the Sterile Processing Department, ensuring the effective decontamination, sterilization, inspection, assembly, and distribution of surgical instruments and equipment. This role supports staff development, compliance with industry standards, and promotes patient safety through high-quality sterile processing practices.

Sterile Processing Department Supervisor Responsibilities: 
  • Supervise, schedule, and evaluate SPD technicians, ensuring appropriate staffing and workflow.
  • Monitor all sterilization processes, documentation, and biological/chemical indicators to ensure compliance with AAMI, AORN, CDC, OSHA, and facility standards.
  • Conduct regular inspections and quality control audits of instruments and equipment.
  • Coordinate the reprocessing of surgical instruments, scopes, and trays with the OR, Endoscopy, and other departments.
  • Oversee inventory levels, ordering, and proper storage of sterile supplies.
  • Ensure that proper protocols are followed for the cleaning and sterilization of reusable medical equipment.
  • Develop and implement in-service training and competency assessments for SPD staff.
  • Maintain accurate records related to sterilization cycles, equipment maintenance, and staff training.
  • Participate in performance improvement initiatives, surveys, and accreditation processes (e.g., Joint Commission).
  • Collaborate with department leaders to address service issues and optimize instrument turnaround time.

Sterile Processing Department Supervisor:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in sterile processing; 1-2 years in a lead or supervisory role preferred.
  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or equivalent required.
  • Certification in Healthcare Leadership or Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) preferred.
  • Strong leadership and team-building skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Solid knowledge of surgical instrumentation, sterilization standards, and regulatory compliance.
  • Proficiency with tracking systems (e.g., Censis, SPM).
  • Ability to train and mentor staff effectively.
  • Attention to detail, strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
