Physician Staffing

Physician vacancies can leave hospitals and medical groups competing for a limited pool of doctors while patient demand continues to grow. Geographic preferences, specialty shortages, and long training pipelines make many searches difficult.

Hunter Recruiting partners with healthcare companies to help them find and hire the experienced physicians they need. For 20+ years, we have built relationships with physicians who may consider the right opportunity but are not actively applying to jobs.

Reach Quiet-Search Talent With a Physician Staffing Agency

There are several challenges of hiring experienced physicians internally:

  1. The talent pool is limited due to increasing patient volumes and a shortage of physicians.
  2. The available candidate pool can become even more narrow once an employer factors in specialty, state licensure, compensation, and location. Rural and underserved organizations face an added recruiting challenge because physicians often favor major metropolitan areas.
  3. Hiring timelines can stretch because of a lack of internal bandwidth to dedicate to the search process.
  4. Credentialing, licensing, and privileging can then extend the timeline even after a candidate accepts.
  5. Without a structured onboarding process and setting expectations from the outset, retention might suffer and drive hiring costs higher.

A physician staffing agency can help employers build the pipeline earlier and keep doctor recruitment moving while internal teams focus on daily hiring demands. This allows healthcare systems to reach more qualified “quiet-search” candidates who are able to make an impact early on.

Physician Staffing FAQs

How can healthcare organizations recruit physicians for rural or underserved locations?

Geography can substantially narrow a physician search, especially for rural hospitals and community clinics, but there are ways to reach the right candidates.

Employers should identify the realistic candidate market early rather than relying on a broad job posting. Compensation, scheduling, and relocation support should reflect the difficulty of the search. Recruiting physicians with existing regional ties can also improve the likelihood of long-term retention.

Why can physician recruitment take so long?

There is a physician supply-demand imbalance. Medical school enrollment has increased, but residency and fellowship capacity has not expanded at the same pace. More than a third of active physicians are also nearing retirement age. Once recruiting begins, specialty and geographic requirements reduce the available pool further. Licensing, credentialing and privileging can add months after the search itself. Employers can reduce avoidable delays by working with a physician staffing company or by defining requirements early, responding quickly to candidates and beginning administrative steps as soon as possible.

How can employers control the cost of recruiting a physician?

Start by calculating the cost of leaving the position vacant. A long search can affect patient access, existing physician workloads and an organization’s reliance on temporary coverage. Employers should also determine which candidate requirements are truly necessary before recruiting begins. An overly restrictive profile can lengthen the search without improving the eventual hire. A focused physician staffing strategy concentrates recruiting resources on realistic candidates and helps prevent months of spending on job advertising or sourcing tactics that are not producing qualified physicians.

How do you recruit physicians?

  1. Define who you actually need. Separate true requirements from preferences so you don’t unnecessarily shrink an already limited candidate pool.
  2. Research the market. Understand what comparable physicians are earning and what competing employers are offering.
  3. Recruit passive candidates. Experienced physicians may not be applying to jobs, so direct outreach and referrals should be a major part of the search.
  4. Qualify interest early. Discuss the factors most likely to make or break the hire before putting candidates through multiple interviews.
  5. Keep the process moving. Strong physician candidates have options. Long gaps between interviews and slow offers give competing employers an advantage.

The biggest mistake is treating physician recruiting like traditional hiring. Posting a position and waiting for qualified applicants is rarely enough for a difficult specialty or market.

How much does it cost to recruit a physician?

There is no single physician recruiting fee. Search firms may charge a flat fee or structure their fee around the physician’s compensation. Contingency searches are also possible, where you do not pay until a placement is made. The difficulty of the search also matters.

The better question is what an open physician position is costing the organization. A vacancy can mean lost patient revenue and longer wait times. It can also put additional pressure on the physicians who are already there. If the position is difficult to fill internally, investing in a recruiter who can reach physicians outside your existing applicant pool may cost less than allowing the vacancy to continue for months.

Before hiring a recruiting firm, ask exactly what the fee covers and whether there are additional expenses during the search.

How do you recruit physicians for hospitals?

Hospitals may face greater recruiting challenges when physicians have concerns about demanding schedules, call requirements or workload compared with other practice settings. Recruiting physicians for hospitals isn’t necessarily harder, but you have to find a specific kind of candidate who is interested in doing that work.

Successful recruiting starts by understanding what could make candidates hesitate and building the offer accordingly. Be transparent about expectations, emphasize the support and resources available to physicians, and make sure compensation is competitive with other opportunities in the market.
