Senior Mechanical Designer
Chesterfield, MO

Purpose:
  • Leads the development of safe, efficient, and constructible mechanical designs for capital projects, supporting multiple sites and projects concurrently on a regional basis and, as needed, across global businesses.
  • Leads mechanical project design, discipline work processes, design standards maintenance, and CAD/3D design tool development.
Key Tasks:
  • Participates as a project team member and serves as the mechanical design discipline lead for large, complex projects.
  • Leads mechanical design activities and closeout documentation in accordance with the engineering execution process and applicable document-control requirements.
  • Leads development of mechanical design packages, including virtual 3D models, equipment arrangements, general arrangement drawings, fabrication or installation details, equipment supports, access platforms, and vendor-data integration.
  • Provides expert guidance to project teams and engineers in 3D modeling, equipment layout, mechanical detailing, maintainability, and construction coordination.
  • Develops mechanical designs that satisfy project, process, safety, operability, maintenance-access, reliability, and constructability requirements.
  • Models and details mechanical equipment and associated components, including equipment connections, supports, guards, access provisions, lifting or removal clearances, and interfaces with piping, structural, electrical, and instrumentation systems.
  • Leads and provides technical oversight of equipment vendors, engineering consultants, design contractors, and fabrication or installation contractors within the mechanical design scope.
  • Supports field verification, constructability reviews, installation, commissioning, checkout, and resolution of design-related field issues within the designer’s responsibilities.
  • Leads development, implementation, and maintenance of mechanical design standards, specifications, standard details, libraries, templates, and CAD/3D design tools.
  • Presents and communicates project scope, design decisions, risks, status, and technical issues to peers, project managers, group leadership, engineering leadership, business stakeholders, and site representatives to maintain project alignment.
  • Coordinates mechanical design interfaces across disciplines and performs design reviews, model reviews, and interference or clash-resolution activities.
  • Verifies existing field conditions and incorporates documented site information, applicable codes, company standards, vendor requirements, and project specifications into the design.
  • Checks or approves mechanical drawings and models for technical accuracy, completeness, consistency, and readiness for issue, in accordance with assigned authority and project quality requirements.
  • Mentors less-experienced designers and promotes consistent design practices, quality expectations, and effective use of CAD/3D tools.
Key Working Relationships:
  • Reports directly to the discipline Engineering Cluster Lead.
  • Works closely with mechanical and other discipline engineers, designers, project managers, procurement, construction, commissioning, maintenance, operations, and safety representatives.
  • Interfaces with senior external contacts, including equipment vendors, fabricators, design consultants, EPCM firms, and construction contractors.
  • Interfaces with site operations, maintenance, reliability, safety, and business leaders to confirm requirements and support project execution.
Qualifications & Competencies:
  • Associate degree in Design, Drafting Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related field; a BS in Engineering or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may also be considered.
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible mechanical design experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with 2D CAD and 3D model-based design systems used for mechanical equipment layout and detailing.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical design principles, equipment arrangement, tolerances, materials, fabrication practices, installation methods, and applicable codes and standards.
  • Ability to interpret process and engineering documents, vendor drawings, specifications, equipment data, calculations, and field information and translate them into coordinated design deliverables.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead design reviews, prioritize concurrent assignments, resolve technical issues, and communicate effectively with technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
